With philanthropic support, the Geriatrics Center of Excellence, Morristown Medical Center has been designated a NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) hospital with “Exemplar” status and ranked by U.S. News & World Report as a top hospital nationwide for geriatrics. The medical center has dramatically increased geriatric medicine offerings and provides exceptional care for older adults in our community.
Ongoing donor funding will be used to make strategic investments in continued education, training and new programs.
Center for Caregiver Training and Education
In 2023, the Louise Washington Trust funded a licensed clinical social worker to provide essential psychosocial support to older patients and their caregivers at the Center for Caregiver Training and Education, a part of the David and Joan Powell Center for Healthy Aging.
Geriatrics Fellowship Program
The donor-funded Geriatrics Fellowship Program at Morristown Medical Center is a comprehensive one-year program for physicians trained in internal or family medicine to gain expertise in assessing, treating and managing geriatric patients in all clinical settings — including office-based care, skilled nursing and long-term care facilities.
The program graduates one to two fellows each year. Since the program’s formation in 2016, Atlantic Health System and Atlantic Medical Group have retained five of eight program graduates. The Geriatrics Fellowship Program also has the highest retention rate of graduates within the last five years of all Atlantic Health System’s Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited training programs, and 100 percent of graduates have passed their geriatrics board exam to achieve board certification.

Bruen Family Endowment for Geriatrics
The Bruen Family Endowment for Geriatrics received a generous gift in 2023 from the Henry & Pauline Becker Charitable Foundation in memory of the late William Bruen Sr., a longtime benefactor and friend of Morristown Medical Center. The endowment’s annual distribution will help ensure continued excellence in geriatrics at the Geriatric Assessment Center at Morristown Medical Center under the leadership and vision of Keerti Sharma, MD.
