Donor Spotlight: D'Amato Family

Long-time Morristown Medical Center volunteers and donors Robert and Gina D’Amato are supporting a hospital initiative that helps young patients with serious illnesses and their families.

Robert experienced first-hand the effects that chronic illnesses have on young people and their families when his brother was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition in college. This inspired the D’Amato family to help expand a vital pediatric palliative care program at Morristown Medical Center that keeps patients and their families at the heart of individualized care plans. The program will grow to include a new board-certified physician specializing in pediatric and adult palliative medicine, a social worker who can provide support for patients and family members in addition to helping to navigate resources, and an administrative team member who will meet the needs that increased patient volumes generate.

Equipment Highlights
  • MRI Goggles

Generous donor contributions purchased two new CinemaVision 20/20 systems for pediatric patient comfort and entertainment during an MRI at Goryeb Children’s Hospital. This innovative tool helps patients to access a variety of calming videos and music, and also allows for two-way communication between the patient and the MRI technician during scans.

  • Atlantic Behavioral Health at Morristown Medical Center and Goryeb Children’s Hospital offer a cutting-edge Collaborative Care model that provides behavioral health services to children and adolescents during their visit with a pediatrician so they can be evaluated and treated for a mental health concern. Thanks to the philanthropy of the Louise Washington Charitable Trust, Andrew and Kerri Price, the Ranger Family Foundation and others, this model will continue to ensure that both the physical and psychological needs of young patients are met, as mental health is essential to a child’s overall health and well-being.

  • A $2.5 million grant from the Dorothy B. Hersh Foundation facilitated the creation of the Hersh Fetal Center, which will offer highly advanced diagnostic technologies for women and their unborn children in high-risk pregnancies. This will elevate the cutting-edge treatments in maternal-fetal medicine and touch countless lives in the years to come. The new Hersh Fetal Center will open in 2025.

  • Seeded by more than $2.24 million in donor contributions, the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program at Morristown Medical Center trains the next generation of pediatric sub-specialists to care for our youngest and most vulnerable patients.

This rigorous ACGME-accredited fellowship program includes three fellow positions – one for each training year. Over three years, fellows gain expertise and skills in clinical care, medical education and research.

Josephine Miller, MD, was selected as the first fellow in the program and has been named the Larry Skolnick Fellow in honor of Lawrence M. Skolnick, MD, the first director of Neonatology for Morristown Medical Center. The program continues to receive annual support from a generous endowment in his name.

  • Philanthropy has played a significant role in the incredible growth and popularity of the Calling All Kids Storytime® Network at Goryeb Children’s Hospital, a premier healing service of the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC).

By enabling new content and programs and helping pediatric patients find laughter and distraction with each other through creating television shows and other mixed media arts projects, children needing services at Goryeb Children’s Hospital can find a way back to being kids again. The program receives ongoing support from WAMMC’s Calling All Grandparents Endowment which is supported by Kathleen E. Christie, among other donors.

Attendees enjoyed award-winning cars, restoration expert talks and guided tours. This generous donation is helping Calling All Kids continue to bring smiles to children and families who rely on Goryeb Children’s Hospital for their care.

  • Last year, donor funding helped support several vital programs at the Child Development and Autism Center:

Child Development/Autism Center Social Skills Group

Children and teens with autism and related developmental disabilities often struggle with making friends, maintaining friendships, understanding social rules and cues, taking others’ perspectives, and conversing with others. Social skills groups are designed to allow these patients to learn the rules of social situations and practice them in a supportive environment.

    Child Life Activity/Equipment Fund

Child Life Specialists focus on keeping young patients calm and distracted during their stay. Donor support helps to purchase stress balls, playing cards, crayons, educational toys, Xboxes, games and Netflix streaming accounts for each patient room, providing many hours of fun and distraction critical to their quality of life during treatment and recovery.

  • Christopher J. Lawlor, MD

Medical Director, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology for the Valerie Fund Children’s Center at Goryeb Children’s Hospital

    The Valerie Fund Children’s Center

Established in 1999, the Valerie Fund Children’s Center at Goryeb Children’s Hospital provides personalized, comprehensive medical care to children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders. With ongoing support from the nonprofit Valerie Fund in 2024, the center continued its work in the Child Life Program, integrative medicine, social work, mental health counseling and dietary assistance to help patients and families remain strong and resilient throughout their journey.

Pediatric Oncology Pharmacy Service and Pharmacist

Pediatric cancer can be very complex to treat. Donors have responded to the need to create a pediatric hematology and oncology pharmacy service dedicated exclusively to young cancer patients. Funding supports a board-certified pediatric oncology pharmacist specially trained to identify the proper therapy and optimal dosage for each patient, reduce side effects and minimize the late effects of treatment. This pharmacist will hold bedside consultations and maintain open communication with children and their families during every step of treatment.

fund highlights
  • Philanthropy from Eva J. Cantor, Esq., provided funding for a pediatric social work position to meet the growing need for additional support for the pediatric neurology population, which is at an increased risk of developing mental health conditions associated with the stress and trauma of chronic disease and/or disability. Social work support will enhance the quality of care, adherence to medical plans and follow-ups and will allow providers to focus on medical care.

  • Jake and his family

For 14-year-old Jake S., donor support meant life-saving care when he needed it most.

When he was struck in the chest by a baseball during a local game, his heart stopped, and he was taken to Morristown Medical Center where the medical team took immediate action to ensure his full recovery. His mother, Marissa, recalls that “nurses, aides, doctors, and specialists all worked together” on Jake’s rare condition while ensuring his comfort. “We will forever be grateful for the unparalleled care he received.”

    Children’s Heart Center

Philanthropy from the Tina and Richard V. Carolan Foundation is bringing a new Philips EPIQ CVx echocardiogram machine to Goryeb Children’s Hospital. This technology offers state-of-the-art imaging and sharper, enhanced information for diagnostic purposes.

  • Donor funding is helping to update the playroom on the pediatric inpatient unit to be more accessible to open play and will allow for more flexible use of the space.
